It may not be the Melbourne Cup, but the Darwin Cup Carnival

It may not be the Melbourne Cup, but the Darwin Cup Carnival in the Northern Territory produces a unique array of fashion that would rival the best dressed anywhere in the country.

Held during Darwin’s dry season, Darwin’s horse racing carnival sees women baring their shoulders in summer frocks while their southern counterparts are shivering.

Territory women have a unique sense of style. It often involves bright colours, bold hats and fascinators, and for those who can afford them – Paspaley Pearls and Di Croco handbags, two luxury labels whose products originate from the Territory.

Roxanne McKee to be the face of Clothes Show Live

The former Hollyoaks star, Roxanne McKee, has been chosen as the face of this year’s Clothes Show Live.

Clothes Show Live 2009, to be held at the Birmingham NEC, December 4th-9th, will mark the 21st birthday of the fashion extravaganza.

Roxanne ‘Roxy’ McKee, is a British actress, model and university graduate, who was discovered after taking part in “Hollyoaks On the Pull”, a Channel 4 talent initiative to discover new talent for the popular soap opera. She was then cast as Louise Summers, and in 2007 took the top prize as Sexiest Woman on TV at the British Soap Awards. She left the role at the end of last year.

Aged 28, McKee had always wanted to be an actress but completed a BA Degree in Politics at Royal Holloway, University of London, so she would always have something to fall back on.

“I’m very flattered to be part of such a huge event,” she said of her starring role at Clothes Show Live 2009.

A keen fashion addict, she believes the secret of individual style is to always wear clothes in which you feel comfortable and which reflect your personality.

Clothes Show Live is the largest public event of its type, under one roof, in Europe. It features a 6,500-seat fashion theatre, designer catwalk shows, celebrity appearances and the opportunity to shop for top fashion labels, vintage pieces and the latest beauty bargains ahead of the Christmas high street rush.

Australian Fashion designer – PERRY TRADEMARK BATTLE OVER

Singer KATY PERRY has abandoned her trademark battle against the Australian fashion designer who shares her name – just one hour before the case was due in court.

Clothing maker Katie Perry, also known as Katie Howell, recently claimed the singer’s lawyers had ordered her to cease trading and withdraw her application to use their shared name on all her goods.

The I Kissed A Girl hitmaker acknowledged the feud in a post on her website, explaining she didn’t plan to take legal action over the issue but her management insisted on filing a trademark protection order in the country.

Now the pop star has decided to drop the case an hour before it was due to be heard by a judge in Canberra, Australia.

Fashion designer Katie Perry says, “I went to sleep last night worrying about this case and whether I was going to lose my business and now all that has changed.

“Physically and mentally it’s taken a huge toll. I’ve learnt a lot of lessons through this – mostly to stick to my guns. I still have to work tonight but I think I’ll find time for a glass of champagne as well.”

Students compete for a place on “America’s Next Top Model”

(Samantha Nelson, incoming first-year marketing student)

The fact that a casting call for “America’s Next Top Model” in March left six New Yorkers injured is evidence that the show can produce almost as much fervor in aspiring “Tyras” as Walmart produces in shoppers on Black Friday. Despite possible impending danger, hundreds of local ladies lined up outside Seven Sushi Bar on Saturday (in possible hope of said cat fights, several men on break from army training gathered there as well). It could have been the sunny weather or simply the phenomenon of Minnesota Nice, but the lines of platform shoe-sporting women were nothing, if not serene.

To try out, participants must bear their deepest psyches in the form of an 11-page application that asks prodding questions such as, “How do you act when you get drunk?” and “Have you ever been arrested? If so, tell us about it.” While the application frequently reminds readers that all sizes are accepted, it doesn’t need to point out that signs of borderline personality disorder are more of a yay than a nay on the series.

Other paperwork to be dealt with pre-tryout is an eligibility form that makes aspiring contestants aware that they must be willing to get naked for shoots and live with “approximately 9 to 14 other female strangers, where you will have little or no privacy.” Thus, the recipe for good TV is made.

Tyra and her panel of fierce, modeling-related, B-list celebs were not there for the first round, instead leaving the initial task to two men — one with a camera and one instructing each participant to state her name, city, phone number and, of course, demonstrate her catwalk.

A&E chatted with three aspiring models from the University to see what the attack of the Gophers on “ANTM” might look like.
